House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Explains the Health Care Reform Effort

From Nancy Pelosi 4/6/10

Yesterday, Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, visited The Commonwealth Club of California and was in conversation with Club President/CEO Dr. Gloria Duffy. A crowd of about 450 in the Mark Hopkins Hotel ballroom in San Francisco listened to Pelosi discuss the challenges of getting a health-care reform bill through Congress, upcoming priorities for Congress (including financial sector regulation, immigration reform, the deficit, and more), and the possibilities of bipartisan cooperation in the hyper-polarized nation's capital (she thinks it's possible on an issue-by-issue basis).

In the photo above, Pelosi (left) responds to a question from Duffy. In the photo below, Pelosi (center) poses with Ambassador James Hormel (a member of The Commonwealth Club's Board of Governors) and Duffy. For more photos from the event, click on the link below the picture.

There are some small business owners who believe the new legislation might even help them level the playing field in regards to their competition. Learn more at KALW's opinion pages - http://bit.ly/96Z1Pv

Good point. When San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom was a guest on HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher" a few weeks ago, he made much the same point during a mini-debate with a critic of health-care reform.
